15.Jun.2009 Design Bake-Off: SKY

So swap the techniques now, I’m going vector, Tim’s the sketchy one. This is based of some practical cut-outs I’m doing with paint swatches.

10.Jun.2009 Design Bake-Off: SEVERITY

Wow, this one was fun. Tim and I both went for black and red. His is more Russian propaganda, mine melbourne bohemien. Good fun, we were both happy with the results.

09.Jun.2009 Design Bake-Off: ROT

New day, new word, old themes for me though. Have to try not to rework old territory so much and embrace potential failure. I like my grumpy old raven however.

08.Jun.2009 Design Bake-Off: HIBERNATE

So, bake-off word was HIBERNATE. I was trying to design the dreams and the retina after images you see when you fall to sleep. Wanted to get an sleeping face image in there some how but oh well – that’s the time limit for you. Tim’s response is great!

Design Bake-off: Contour

Hard stuff, Tim and I both freaked out at the 20min mark and decided on a 10min extension. A bit like my interpretation of Above.

07.Jun.2009 Design Bake-Off: ABOVE

2nd Bake-Off

2nd Bake-Off: Above.

Tim sooo won this round, I started along one path and then changed about 7min in…arrrg the pressure. Still, loads of fun and makes you innovate!

Design Bake-Off: QUARTERLY

Tim and I completed our first design bake-off! We’ve been inspired by the Cut & Paste guys to have a go at generating some art and design in 20min. It’s surprising how hard it is to free you mind up and just go with it.

Our first Bake-Off word was QUARTERLY.

bo_070609_quarterlyIt’s a seasonal/nature response. A bit twee, but there’s some elements that I want to use again. Making flowers from Illustrator squiggles has potential!

Tim’s result looked Andy Warhol inspired…

04.Jun.2009 Having some fun…

So, a few things have got me going sketchy-design wise…my husband, who gets into his own animation projects when he gets home, Cut & Paste which seems to be a ‘watch’em design!’ bake-off and the website that I’m doing for Sophie Howarth (awesome photographer!).

Sophie sketched/doodled all these hand drawn elements for the site graphics and it results in a lovely ’stream of consciousness’ feel, no rules—no mistakes.

I used to do similar drawings to ‘de-virginise’ a white page. A clean sheet of paper and a new sketch book is the most intimidating thing for me—pooh public speaking—that’s a doddle compared to the first drawing in a new sketch pad…

Going to try and do one every couple of days…

30.May.2009 Having withdrawl symptoms…

So I washed my mobile phone this morning. Walked into the kitchen to hear a strange bumping in the washing machine. Investigate. Disaster. How the f*#k did that get in there? Bugger. Going to have to deal with Optus. Sigh. Optus, with in the first 20min are confusing, almost deliberately misdirecting and refuse to try and actually help people.

The feeling of being disconnected to the ‘you can contact me anytime’ ether is disconcerting. We are animals evolved around our ability to communicate. Yet, as modern day humans, we have divorced ourselves from much of the meaniful person to person vocal, visual and ‘pheremonial’ communication that creates the whole picture for us. Our ability to pick up the deeper signals is being diminished as we focus on the superficial. We continue to stare in the mirror like demented budgerigars and believe that the botoxed expressions we see are real…

See, withdrawl symptoms. I didn’t expect for anyone to actually call me, I just miss warmth of knowing I was in the ether.
